Abstract
This presentation will outline the pedagogic background to a ground-breaking initiative that saw senior academic staff work with postgraduate students to produce a collection of
academic chapters within a new pedagogic research publication. Innovation in Learning and Teaching is a project born of a need identified during the Teaching Fellows Conference of 2016 for a tangible outcome; a teaching and learning text with a focus on student experience,
innovation and internationalisation.
We will first explore the initial impetus behind this communal effort to broadcast pedagogical innovations at Edinburgh Napier and the rationale which underpins the need to broadcast the ongoing reflections of our community on ways to find better ways to reach our students.
The presentation will then outline the procedures that underpinned the entire process, from selection of abstracts, meticulous editing, double blind peer reviewing, the application of rigorous production and printing standards, and the commissioning of expertise across academia and the publishing industry. The different actors in this process (academic writers at different stages of their publishing career, editors, publishing students) will contribute to
build a picture of a collaborative venture which is entering a new phase of dissemination.
Innovations in Learning and Teaching highlights the university’s priorities for meaningful student-centred education and the need for a global outlook within pedagogical activities in keeping with changing contexts and modalities. Backed by a wealth of information and richness of insight, these are issues relevant to policymakers and academics everywhere.
This presentation provides an opportunity to investigate how the institution can support research and publication by means of an innovative new model.
