The Role of Arts and Culture in Lifting Communities Out of Poverty: A Review of Evidence

Abstract

The purpose of this evidence review is to present an overview of the available academic and grey literature that identifies and analyses evidence relevant for understanding the contribution of arts and culture to the alleviation of poverty. The review considers the literature examining ways in which arts and culture can be seen to contribute to the alleveiation of material poverty.

While acknowleding the challeges of leveraging arts and culture to this end, the review identifies pathways though which arts and culture have been incorporated into policy approches to poverty alleviation. Finally, the review advances recommendations for those in the fields of cultural policy, local government, the third sector and cultural institutions to consider in order to better the leverage achieved when seeking to utilise arts and culture in this way.
