Abstract
This short article reflects on the challenges of staging new writing in a playhouse nominally committed to the production of early modern drama. By focusing particularly on Peter Oswald, the first writer in residence at Shakespeare’s Globe, the article highlights the status of new writing at the outset of the Globe project and considers what the implications of ‘residing’ in such a theatre are for understanding contemporary playwrights’ work as autonomous, separate from Shakespeare and the theatrical past.
