Abstract

This paper critically examines the definition and identification of talent in the Nigerian banking industry. Through a multilevel case study of three commercial banks, we draw on 20 in-depth interviews with human resources and operational leaders at corporate and business unit levels to ascertain how the term talent is defined and the process involved in identifying talents. Findings show the talent dynamics in the Nigerian banking industry, addressing the lack of consensus in the talent definition, the interplay between subject and object approaches, and the multifaceted talent identification process. The insight contributes to both academic discourse and practical implications for HR professionals and policymakers in the banking sector. The paper responds to the call for much-needed empirical evidence on the talent identification process, particularly in the context of developing economies, and suggests a more nuanced view of talent definition and identification.
