The athletic, disabled and menstruating body: examining menstruation in the context of parasport

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

In this chapter we will adopt a focus on ‘the body’ to explore the complexities and negotiations occurring around the menstruating, disabled and athletic body. Considering each body in turn, there is a wealth of literature examining their positioning and value in society, and the implications of this. For the menstruating, disabled and athletic body, there are tensions and complexities that require management and navigation, which will be discussed in this chapter. However, these tensions and complexities become significantly heightened in instances where the disabled, athletic and menstruating body intersect. In this chapter, we seek to raise key questions and highlight notable research gaps, to encourage future research to enhance our understanding of menstruation within a parasport context.
