Abstract
This study investigates teachers’ perceptions of their original and ‘renewed’ school environments and associated changes in their thoughts, feelings and behaviour. A questionnaire was developed and administered to all teaching staff in five secondary schools in Scotland, before construction of the new schools and then again at 10 and 46 months after the new schools had been completed. Statistical analyses showed that there was a strong improvement in teachers’ rating of the school environment, moderate improvements I Environmental Control, Negative Environmental Perceptions and Work Self-Perceptions,
and a small improvement in Job Satisfaction in the new schools. Overall, the study demonstrates a positive, cumulative effect of the school environment over time and provides evidence for the value of investing in school environments.
