Abstract

Scotland’s aging population presents significant challenges for independent living and healthcare. Smart homes, equipped with technologies that enhance independence and well-being, could offer a solution, especially for vulnerable groups like older adults and those with cognitive deficiencies. This opinion article examines current smart home technologies in Scotland and discuss their implementation challenges. It identifies key barriers to implementation, including privacy concerns, high costs, complexity, and trust issues. While smart homes in Scotland primarily focus on energy management and luxury features, emerging systems like FIT homes show promise for improving health monitoring and reducing caregiver burden. However, challenges related to activity recognition, privacy, and system complexity remain significant obstacles. To advance smart home adoption in Scotland, a user-centered approach and stronger collaboration between healthcare providers, local councils, and developers are essential. A comprehensive strategy should be implemented to overcome these challenges and raise public awareness, ensuring that smart homes effectively support vulnerable populations and enhance their quality of life.
