Sleep And Project Success: Mediating Effect Of Emotional Intelligence And Decision Making

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

In recent literatures, investigation of factors which affect the success of a project is of great interest. It is evident that project success is affected by human cognitive aspects like emotional intelligence and decision making, which are in turn affected by people’s sleep. However, the relations among these constructs (sleep, emotional intelligence, decision making and project success) have never been examined in a holistic manner, thus leaving the relation between sleep and project success unexplored. To address this research gap, this study investigates the relations by analyzing empirical data collected from 69 project management students, using PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modelling) method, while considering their achievement in a project-shaped academic module as project success. It has been found that,
i. while sleep does not have direct effect on project success, through the mediating effect of decision making, a relation between these constructs exist.
ii. all the relations among the constructs evidenced from literature stands true in the context of this study (sleep - decision making, emotional intelligence - decision making, emotional intelligence - project success and decision making - project success), except the relation between sleep and emotional intelligence.
iii. gender difference of the participants does not have any significant effect on the relations among the constructs considered.
The findings suggest that, in a project scenario, healthy sleep and high emotional intelligence of the decision makers will be impactful in boosting project success. Further research with responses from real-world project management personnel is suggested to generalize the applicability of these findings.
