Abstract

Unprecedented level of environmental loading of drugs, antimicrobial resistance, energy, wastes and carbon emission have recently attracted the pharma stakeholders across the globe to invest on environmental sustainability related technologies for a greener transition. While industry 4.0 technologies (e.g., IoT, blockchain, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, cyber-physical led PAT etc) adoption across the drug lifecycle could offer a systematic solution to such greener transition, unfortunately, there is hardly any research to date to understand the environmental impact of adopting Industry 4.0 technologies across drug lifecycle. Hence, this research aims to address this gap through deploying qualitative multimethod (interviews with key pharma stakeholders and assessment of environmental reports) in the UK pharma industry context. The study contributes to create a Pharma 4.0 roadmap for greening the sector.
