Remote supervision of research projects in computing: current trends and challenges

Supervision is a critical one-to-one interaction between students and supervisors, significantly influencing research thesis completion, quality, and overall learning outcomes. Its importance is amplified in Online and Distance Learning (ODL), where remote supervision is increasingly prevalent due to advances in communication technologies and collaborative platforms. This study investigates contemporary trends, challenges, and strategies in remotely supervising computing research projects. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining an anonymous survey of graduate students with follow-up interviews to capture feedback on online supervision tools and practices, including virtual meetings (Zoom, MS Teams), collaborative platforms (Google Colab, GitHub, Jupyter Notebook, Kaggle Notebooks), and asynchronous communication channels. Survey questions focused on supervisor–student relationship building, project expectations, milestone tracking, feedback mechanisms, and peer interaction. Insights from graduate students informed the design of a refined remote supervision framework for undergraduate students in a Transnational Education (TNE) setting, balancing synchronous and asynchronous interactions, group meetings, and writing support to reduce isolation and enhance engagement. Findings emphasize the need for clear communication, cultural sensitivity, regular progress monitoring, early intervention, and guidance on supplementary learning resources. This research highlights that structured, responsive remote supervision can foster student engagement, support academic development, and ensure successful research outcomes in geographically distributed learning contexts.
