Abstract
Charlie Anders futuristic book, All the Birds in the Sky (2016), and winner of several major literary awards in fiction, explores a world turning into chaos. Set against the backdrop of a dystopic world beset by natural disasters and conflict destroying human habitation and destabilising world order, the books’ two protagonists (Patricia, a witch with magical powers and Lawrence, a scientist and inventor of a time machine) finally come together to save the world from its ailments, despite their earlier differences and each possessing different powers and abilities (Anders, 2016). Anders’ book is a gloomy tale of a contemporary world in chaos characterised by the breaking down of moral order, religious conflicts, territorial/regional wars, failing political systems, world leaders with a power grab mentality, and economic woes that push many young people, especially from developing countries, to perish in the sea in their desperate search for haven in other countries.
