NOlympics anywhere: building a transnational anti-Olympic movement

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter will explore the increasing interconnections between local social movements contesting instances of the Olympic Games. Drawing on scholar-activist work on the ground with movements in Rio de Janeiro, Paris and Los Angeles and beyond, the chapter charts the collaborations and connections that have developed over the last two decades. In doing so, it explores the gradual evolution of a global movement against the Olympics over this period, exploring the challenges and opportunities for transnational organising in the context of sport mega-events. It concludes by considering the potential for transformative change to the existing model of hosting sport mega-events and the role of this movement in creating that change.
