A suitable model has been developed to predict the effects of CO2 laser irradiation on magnesia partially stabilised zirconia. The paper presents an analytical model to simulate the transverse electromagnetic mode (TEM01) CO2 laser beam of using two paralleled laser beams and investigate the melt pool depth geometry in the MgO-PSZ following CO2 laser irradiation. The predicted melt pool depth and the experimental values were in relatively good agreement over a certain range of laser energy densities. The deviation between the calculated results and measured results was attributed to the difference between the real effects of TEM01 beam mode and two simulated paralleled beams, the neglecting of sideways conduction energy and the significant difference between the meltpool diameter and laser beam diameter.
