Abstract

Two main multifunctional reactors, which are used in water treatment systems: up-flow direct filtration reactors with sand bed and up-flow direct filtration reactors with activated carbon bed are described. The mathematical description of the unit processes (coagulation, flocculation, filtration, sedimentation, adsorption) that take place during the operation of these reactors has been derived. The mathematical models enable to predict and determine the effectiveness of purification and reactors operation time.
This study presents a modelling approach to investigate these systems and identifies essential parameters and analytical data that are required.
