Abstract
This book offers the first comprehensive look at the nature and nurture of mass tourism. While widely recognised as a key driver for economic and social development in both developed and developing countries, mass tourism has been severely criticised over the last decade. The focus of attention has now shifted to alternative forms of tourism considered to be more environmentally sustainable. The purpose of the book is two-fold: (1) ‘address a notable gap in the tourism literature, namely an analysis of mass tourism from a global perspective’; and (2) ‘establish a link between historical and present studies of tourism’ (p. 232). It does this by discussing the relevant literature and presenting contemporary case studies.
