This paper aims to discuss the learning mechanisms used in an inter-organisational project, i.e. transportation project in a developing country. This paper studies the ability of a project to disseminate learning to organisations and across organisations.

Design/methodology/approach
An interview-based case study was conducted to examine the Islamabad–Rawalpindi Metro project in Pakistan. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis.

Findings
This paper identified four learning mechanisms, which are dissected into organisational and inter-organisational levels. Additionally, the learning mechanisms are interplayed with different types of learning.

Originality/value
