Abstract

This paper uses 2001 census data from India to identify and measure the spatial structure and intensity of urban deprivation in Delhi. We analyze fourteen indicators from the census using a factor analysis to identify the specific type of deprivation and consequently multiple deprivations by adding it. The study identifies three main types of deprivation - housing, economic and urban amenities and found that they are diverse in character and lies on the outside of the central city (statutory towns) interface to rural areas. The study suggests for robustness in identification of poor and enable better focused targeting for urban poverty alleviation program.
