Abstract

Immersive serious games (ISG), i.e. the combination of serious games and immersive technologies, is a novel educational and training approach that aims to engage and motivate learners by reaping the benefits of immersive learning and learning using serious games.
ISG research is still in its early days, and there is a gap in understanding design approaches that allow the development of successful ISG. Many authors have addressed the development of design guidelines in serious games and in immersive technologies; however, very few articles cover the intersection of both.

In this paper, we present the thematic analysis of the literature on design guidelines for serious games, immersive technologies, and ISG, used to develop 100+ design guidelines for ISG.

This paper aims to provide guidance to researchers and practitioners that need to design and develop immersive serious games applications.
