Abstract
This presentation presents the learning from the School of Business and Creative Industries’ (BCI) ‘Future Programme Leader’ training programme.
The Programme Leader role in Higher Education is characterised by fuzziness (Mitchell, 2015), likened to circus acts (Aitken & O’Carroll, 2020), or tensions (Haugen et al, 2023), demonstrating a need for clarity and/or support to navigate these. In 2021, we set up a staff development programme to help create some clarity around the role in our School.
‘Future PLs’ is a six-session programme run annually within BCI. Each session has a central theme that relates to the Programme Leader role, e.g., programme management, the student experience, and it utilises guest speakers from the School and wider institution to help deliver the workshops. This introduces the cohort to ‘knowledgeable others’ (Barry, 2023) who can help them navigate their professional learning.
Now in its third year, the programme has been well received by staff (and senior management), and we have started to see the impact on the individual careers of participants, and on the ability of the School to succession plan. Feedback from participants has been highly positive and this session offers opportunity to share that learning with the wider university.
