Abstract
This chapter examines the dynamics of distrust, trust violations, and the strategies for repairing trust, with a particular focus on interpersonal relationships. Using existing literature and theoretical perspectives, we identify key factors that influence the emergence of distrust, such as betrayal, deception, unfulfilled promises, and hidden agendas. Our analysis highlights two primary forms of distrust—calculus-based and identification-based—and explores how these impact relationships. Furthermore, we discuss various trust repair strategies, including verbal explanations, apologies, and the use of intermediaries, particularly within African business contexts. The chapter concludes by outlining practical implications for trust repair and proposing future research directions to enhance understanding of distrust and trust restoration across different settings.
