From concept to creation: a structured, cross-disciplinary pathway for embedding entrepreneurial education at UWS

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This case study examines and showcases the systematic and evolving embedding of Entrepreneurial Education (EE) at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), aligning with its Strategy 2030, UWS Graduate Attributes, and the national Entrepreneurial Campus Blueprint. UWS has implemented a structured, cross-disciplinary pathway that integrates entrepreneurial attributes across all academic domains and through supportive mechanisms including student support, business expertise and regional level consultancy.

The UWS approach utilises a dual-pronged strategy, informed by QAA and the Entrepreneurial Campus Blueprint (ECB, Theme 4) reporting guidance. First, a formal curriculum involving both a vertically and horizontally integrated framework of credit-bearing modules (SCQF Levels 7–11) that progress from idea generation to venture development. Second, informal support through co-curricular activities including the UWS Ignite program, business incubation spaces, and ‘learning by doing’ initiatives such as start-up simulations.

The case highlights the university's role as a regional anchor, fostering an entrepreneurial culture through partnerships with SMEs and industry mentors to enhance graduate employability. Student feedback underscores the value of experiential learning and expert delivery. Looking forward, UWS aims to map entrepreneurial competencies into all programme objectives and formalising external partnerships. Ultimately, this model positions UWS as a proactive ‘entrepreneurial university’ dedicated to developing resilient, innovative graduates ready for complex and innovative economies.
