Abstract
Through a series of vignettes, this chapter explores the experiences of three PhD researchers undertaking qualitative research in the field of sport and exercise. The value of recognising research experiences in the field, placing an often-neglected focus on the researcher, their emotions, and reactions within the research context, is discussed first. We then turn to highlight the value of peer support, before examining the three themes the researchers understood to be significant to their early research experiences. The first theme delves into the contrast between preparing for fieldwork and the reality of being in the field, the second theme considers the influence of gender on our fieldwork, and the final theme acknowledges the complexity of navigating day-to-day life, alongside academic demands and responsibilities. Throughout these discussions, top tips are offered, and the chapter concludes with some useful framing questions, seminar tasks and suggestions for further reading.
