Exploring the nature of inclusion

Abstract

Inclusion is a by-word for acceptance and belonging and yet in stratified societies the reach of inclusion pivots around the social status of the group or individual. Migrants for example have less comprehensive to the benefits of a welfare state compared with the indigenous residents of the UK. Older residents of a community also experience exclusion in terms of mobility access and the availability of support. In this lecture a diversity of groups are presented in terms of the umbrella term inclusion. It is argued their encounters with inclusion vary as 'suits' their positionality within a society's hierarchy of moral, social and political norms.
