Abstract

Our mindreading capacity makes us able to infer others' mental states, such as others' perspectives, intentions and beliefs. This special ability to infer false beliefs has been assumed to be a unique human ability for almost 40 years now. In the past decade, a growing number of evidence supported the idea that an implicit form of mindreading might also exist, where the implicit form means automatic cognitive processes. We measure implicit processes mainly through behavioral measurement. Certain behavioral variables are not only the manifestations of the mindreading ability but the strong evidence of it. However, little attention has been paid to the possible functions of these behaviors. In the present review we aim to offer a possible functional interpretation of two spontaneous behavioral variables of implicit mindreading: the behavior predicting eye gaze and the intervening-preventive behavior. Our method applied is a selective review of the strong evidence of implicit belief reading. We suggest that behavior predicting eye movements support self-other integration, while intervening-preventive behaviors support self-other distinction on the level of perspectives. We discuss the role of these spontaneous behaviors also in the case of atypical mindreading.
