Abstract
PurposeThe main objective of this project is to develop a support system using research students to help Honours students in their dissertations to improve UWS KPIs. This project will have a number of benefits. For our undergraduate students, to improve pass rates, students’ success, students satisfaction and publish their dissertations with the help from both research students and their supervisors. For our research students, to develop their academic skills and get some joint publications with the Honour students and this also can be considered as part of their Continuous Professional and Personal Plan. The benefits also can be extended to the Accounting &Finance group, the Business School and UWS to enhance reputation, students’ satisfaction, attracting more students including international students and keep improving UWS position in the league table.
Design/Methodology/ApproachThe lead researcher secured some money from the Business School Dean fund to appoint a number of research students to support the Honours students in their dissertations in 2018/19. Each research student allocated one Honour students and the lead researcher invites the research student to attend the supervisory meetings. Evaluations forms have been designed to be distributed to both the Honours students and research students to reflect on this experience. The initial and informal feedback received from honours students, that such system motivated them to work hard as this is the first time they are responsible to produce a document that 12000 words which is completely different than writing an essay. Research students also think that this is a great chance to learn how to supervise dissertations on undergraduate levels and provide feedback.
FindingsHonours students will submit their dissertations end of March 2019. Therefore, the evaluation forms from both research students and the honour students will be completed after that date which is after the deadline of abstract submission for this conference. However, the results will be ready to be presented at the conference in June 2019.
Practical implicationThe findings might allow to extend this system to be adopted on a bigger scale next year.
Conference ThemesAssessment and Feedback, Research informed Teaching and Meeting Societal challenges
