Abstract
The convergence of artificial intelligence, industrial data analytics, and cyber-physical systems has ushered in a new era where digital twins (DTs) act as the cognitive core of smart manufacturing. These dynamic virtual counterparts of real-world processes are enabling continuous learning, predictive decision-making, and unprecedented visibility into quality performance. This talk will explore how the statistical foundations of process monitoring, data integration, and uncertainty modelling are being re-imagined within the digital twin environment. Unlike traditional quality systems that respond after deviations occur, the DT paradigm allows real-time synchronization between physical operations and data-driven simulations, converting monitoring into a proactive and adaptive intelligence layer. By linking Internet of Things (IoT) data streams, machine learning algorithms, and statistical process control (SPC) logic, digital twins empower manufacturing systems to self-diagnose, self-optimize, and self-correct. This synthesis of statistics and smart technologies represents not only a technological transformation but also a philosophical shift in how quality is defined, predicted, and sustained. The talk will illustrate practical examples where DT-enabled monitoring enhances production reliability, predictive maintenance, and sustainability, while preserving the rigour of statistical inference. Participants will gain insights into the emerging role of statisticians in shaping the analytics backbone of Industry 4.0; where data, intelligence, and quality converge to form the foundation of the next industrial revolution.
