Abstract
An approach based on probabilistic reasoning makes it possible to deduce, for a granular medium under loading, a diffusion equation in terms of vertical stresses (Harr, 1977). In this approach the medium is considered to be formed of particles and a charge (point or distributed) applied on the surface follows an erratic path between grains according to a given probability law. The medium is characterized by a lateral pressure coefficient. In our case, we used a coefficient of "Reimbert" which differs from the classical earth coefficient in its formulation. The numerical treatment of the problem showed the importance of coefficient choice to characterize the granular medium (soil). We have mainly studied cases of semi-finite granular media (soils) subjected to axisymmetric loadings.
