Abstract

This paper describes a novel method of solid particulate fallout rate determination utilizing a high resolution digital imaging sensor. Commercially available low cost CMOS multimillion pixel detectors are illuminated with monochromatic light and subjected to fallout. Algorithms are used to determine information on particle fallout rate, size and shape. Estimation on particle origins can be made based on derived geometry; this information is deemed to be vital to the improvement of the contamination control in space environments in which spacecraft and their associated instruments reside during manufacture, assembly, integration, test and launch, where particles pose a contamination threat.
