Abstract

This study reports on the experience of a group of postgraduate research students who are leading a peer support and learning network at the University of the West of Scotland called PGR Connections. PGR Connections provides an opportunity for PGRs to come together 6 times a year to discuss issues of importance to the PGR community. PGR Connections leaders take a prominent role in these sessions by presenting their own experience and inviting discussion and the sharing of others’ personal experiences. A previous study suggests that peer learning pedagogies can help to build a sense of community and provide a forum for PGRs to learn from the experience of others (Wilson et al., 2023). This study adds to these initial findings by evaluating how those leading the network benefitted from this experience. A focus group was carried out with the PGRs leading the network, followed by six peer learning network sessions delivered by each of the participants. A second focus group was carried out with the same participants after the network concluded its activities for the 2023/24 session, to ascertain the benefits and skills development. The students came from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and levels of study. Drawing on the evaluation findings, this presentation will discuss the outcomes that were achieved.
