Abstract
Concerns around the lack of student engagement in assessment process, alarming cases of plagiarism, and ongoing emphasis on the consideration of student mental wellbeing in the assessment process have already challenged the academic to design and conduct assessment in higher education. The use of Generative AI and other related emerging AI technologies has added unpresented level of disturbance onto the existing challenges in designing assessments. Therefore, there is no alternative to think out of the box while designing an assessment. This presentation aims to explore some recent development on various innovative assessment approaches which have already been applied and evaluated. The presentation covers two innovative approaches: a) the application of Virtual Reality (VR) in assessment design. b) The concept of ‘Event Management’ in assessment design. The VR led assessment could be a way forward if deployed successfully. While the low-end VR technology can be used with limited assessment functionality, the high-end VR technology reserves higher potential. The event management-based assessment could be a critical tool to connect various stakeholders (e.g., industry professionals, alumni, academic) in the assessment to increase the authenticity and robustness of assessment, achieving multifaced benefits.
