Abstract
The article describes a practice-focused assessment in an HR Systems & Analytics module that develops students’ professional HR capabilities, not just theoretical knowledge. Students work in teams to design and deliver a 40‑minute interactive implementation session for a new HR system to simulated line managers. They must secure buy‑in, demonstrate evidence-based decision-making, address organisational implications (e.g. data privacy, role changes, training) and use engaging methods such as role-plays and discussions. The assessment is supported by facilitation guides, checklists and a short “test run.” Student feedback highlights gains in communication, collaboration, confidence, problem-solving and adaptability, with strong grades and especially positive outcomes for quieter students. The experience shows that authentic, role-based assessments, where students are trusted with responsibility and leadership, build professional identity, employability and core HR skills more effectively than traditional written assessments alone.
