Academy prospect to first team regular: elite head coach and player experiences of youth to first team transition in football

Current literature has shown that transition from academy to first team in elite football is highly challenging and often turbulent. One perspective yet to be explored is that of elite level players who have experienced the entire transition process from academy football to the first team. In addition, an examination of the perceptions of an elite first team head coach would provide a complementary perspective to these insights. Accordingly, this study aimed to generate novel findings by examining the transition experiences and perceptions of a first team head coach (n=1) and first team players (n=4) at an elite club. Participants were purposefully sampled and interviewed to extract rich data sets. Thematic analysis of interview data generated 3 themes: (1) mentality over talent, (2) adaptation to first team, and (3) bridging the gap. The findings support mental strength, and in particular, resilience, as being critical aspects of successful first team transition at the elite level and highlight the nature of the hyper-demanding environment players are required to integrate to.
