Abstract

The yrast decay sequences of neutron-rich Cl isotopes, populated in deep-inelastic processes produced by the interaction of 234 MeV 37Cl ions with a 160Gd target, were studied using the EUROBALL IV gamma-ray detector array. The observed energy separation of the 3/2+ and 1/2+ levels in odd-A Cl isotopes decreases (with an eventual crossing of levels) as the occupation of the 1f7/2 neutron shell increases, in agreement with the predictions of shell model calculations.
