A critical examination of the agro-allied supply chain procurement: a case study of Nigeria’s cocoa industry

    Abstract

    Purpose
    The aim of this research is to critically investigate the Agro-allied supply chain of the Nigerian Cocoa Industry and the influence of e-procurement system on seamless and equitable procurement practices among the network of organisations in the supply chain of the Nigerian Cocoa Industry.

    Design/methodology/approach
    The method and materials that would be employed in achieving objectives of the research are as follows:
    Primary data will be collected through direct observation, conduct of interviews and administration of questionnaires to primary farmers, government and individuals/organisations making up the cocoa supply chain. Secondary data will be collected from data banks such as the Cocoa Association of Nigeria, Agricultural Development Bank and Nigerian Bureau of Statistics. This data will be statistically analysed using tools such as Ms-Excel, SPSS and ANOVA. Thereafter, the results will be presented in charts and graphs.

    Findings
    The research work is in progress with the purpose to:
    1. Conduct an extensive exploration of existing theories in the field of e-procurement and the application of information and communication technologies to business practices with the purpose of gaining deeper insights into the field of research
    2. Investigate the current practices in the supply chain of the coca industry in Nigeria through extensive data gathering with the purpose of identifying the key issues governing production, processing and trading of cocoa products in Nigeria
    3. Evaluate and analyse emerging issues and variables from the field work in juxtaposition with the theoretical proposition detailed in the literature to help to identify the gaps in the industry practices with the purpose of developing new procurement approaches for the cocoa industry in Nigeria
    4. Indicate the implications of the result from the research and suggest new approaches for efficient and effective supply chain practices in the Nigerian Cocoa Industry.

    Practical implications
    This research will be useful to Nigeria’s Cocoa industry, it will be useful to decisions maker in the Cocoa industry in Nigeria, it will be useful to the academic work and it will be useful to future research students.

    Social Implications
    It will help trade and development in Nigeria and the importing countries around the world.

    Originality/value
    The first and distinct research at the PhD level on supply chain procurement in the Nigerian Cocoa industry.
