Decontamination of medical devices using Gamma Rays and Neutrons

Prize: Prize (including medals and awards)

Description

Our project investigates whether highly penetrative radiation sources like gamma rays and neutrons can more effectively disrupt biofilms and sterilize medical equipment than current methods. Through laboratory testing and trials on decommissioned endoscopes, we aim to determine their ability to remove biofilms, eliminate bacteria, and improve decontamination outcomes. This multidisciplinary work seeks to create a more efficient, cost-saving sterilization strategy that enhances patient safety and could deliver significant financial benefits to the NHS.
