Dr Michael Guo is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the University of the West of Scotland. He specialises in artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and digital innovation in accounting and finance.

He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and focuses on the use of technology to support learning, curriculum development, and academic leadership in accounting education.

His research covers AI use in accounting, digital teaching methods, professional judgement, and sustainability. His work has appeared in journals including the Journal of Business Ethics and Studies in Higher Education. He has received recognition for his research, including the Best Paper Prize from Accounting Education: An International Journal and the Best Developmental Paper Award from the British Academy of Management.

Dr Guo leads curriculum development projects. He created and teaches Python for Accounting, which introduces programming, machine learning, and AI within an accounting and finance framework. He is the author of the textbook Data Analysis for Business Students: A Mind Mapping Approach (Routledge, 2025) and the forthcoming textbook Python for Accounting and Finance: A Mind Mapping Approach (Routledge, 2026), both of which have received national and international attention.

He is currently leading a project funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh on the impact of AI on the future of accounting. This project has produced an AI skillsets database, an AI governance checklist, and a risk assessment toolkit designed for accounting and finance professionals.

In his teaching, Dr Guo has integrated AI-based tools such as AI Teaching Assistants (AITAs) and developed interactive accounting games to support concept learning through student activity.

More recently, Dr Guo received the Certificate of Excellence for Innovation in Accounting Streams Resources at the Accounting Streams Workshop held at University College London. The award recognised his contribution to the development of interactive accounting games that support educators and students worldwide. His resources include Accounting Streams Unit 19: The Variance Vault (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.15915048) and Accounting Streams Unit 8: The Double-Entry Trilogy (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.16845595), which have been widely adopted as open-access teaching tools.
