Area of academic expertise - outline

We are interested in studying cellular senescence, a process of growth arrest of cells that encounter unscheduled stress. Senescent cells accumulate in tissues of humans and other organisms with age. Cellular senescence is thought to promote cell and tissue ageing. Cellular senescence occurs in conjunction with chromatin changes and epigenetic changes. It is crucial to understand how chromatin is maintained in long-term proliferation arrested senescent cell and possibly in an "aged" cell. We are using various senescence model systems to test various compounds for their ability to eliminate/kill senescent cells. Such compounds are called senolytics. We are beginning to dissect key processes involved in ageing with hope of finding chemical and natural compounds as anti-ageing agents. We have two good hits and looking for industrial/biotech collaborators for commercialization.
