Research Output per year
I am interested in academic staff development, especially in the area of technology-enhanced education and assessment practice, learning technology, academic literacies, distance education, blended and online learning curriculum design, online communities, communities of inquiry. I am keen to foster interdisciplinary research, as well as cross-institutional collaboration.
Area of academic expertise - outline
My interests are cross-disciplinary in that I have an applied linguistics background, but my current area of focus is with education, specifically in relation to academic professional development, learning spaces; peer-supported review of teaching; learning technology and innovative pedagogies.
Current research activities
I am currently putting together a bid for an ESRC research grant that I hope to have ready for submission in May 2017. My research study centres around marking and feedback practices in higher education. I plan to begin with a pilot within UWS and then broaden my study to investigate practices in other institutions including one in England and one Russell group university.
On a smaller scale, I am also involved in two different research projects focusing on nursing education at UWS. The first is focused on peer-assisted learning for clinical skills development for pre-registration nursing students and the second looks at pedagogical and emotion benefits of simulation de-brief for nursing students on a pre-registration programme. I intend to publish and present on both projects over the course of 2017.
Desired research direction
I have identified a gap in the literature in relation to the use of peer learning by academic staff in HE for professional development and reflective practice. Gaps also exist in knowledge of the linguistic characteristics of written feedback in HE, which may be a reason why HE institutions continue to struggle with poor NSS scores in the area of assessment and feedback.
As I am the beginning of my academic career, I am interested in developing a cross-disciplinary approach to research, drawing upon literature, theoretical and analytical frameworks from various disciplines including linguistics, sociology and education. I am interested in developing research partnerships with academics in other UK institutions, as well as international ones.
