Personal profile

Overview

I am a microbiologist with research interests in environmental microbiology. My primary interests are microbial remediation of xenobiotic-contaminated land, microbial bioleaching of Critical Raw Materials from WEEE and the control of microbial growth and colonisation in the built environment. Recently supervised projects include studies on the development and application of rapid methods for quantification and cultivation of methanogens in bio-methane producing fermenters, biological extraction of valuable metals from waste printed circuit boards and tantalum capacitor scrap and the efficacy of hydrogen peroxide for infection control and management in healthcare settings.

Area of academic expertise - outline

  • Bioremedition of organic contaminants (e.g. polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons) in soil systems
  • Bioleaching of metals from WEEE
  • Control of microorganisms in the built environment (e.g. healthcare settings)

Current research activities

  • Director of Studies for PhD project (Understanding the efficacy of hydrogen peroxide for infection control and management in the healthcare setting)
