Personal profile
Overview
Stephen Hughes is a lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland whose work sits at the intersection of work-based learning, leadership development, and the future of work. His academic practice is grounded in supporting learners to connect rigorous theory with the realities of professional life, paticularly through applied and reflective learning approaches that strengthen impact in the workplace.
Stephen is currently completing a PhD at University of Strathclyde examining how digital transformation is reshaping the medical profession, with a particular focus on general practice in Scotland and the evolving skills, identities, and working conditions of GPs. His research considers how technology is influencing clinical work, professional identity, and the skills and knowledge required to deliver care in increasingly complex, data-driven environments.
Alongside his academic role, Stephen has built an extensive consultancy portfolio, supporting organisations to develop workforce capability through CPD, leadership development, micro-credentials, and tailored training delivery. He has also contributed to skills and workforce initiatives, including work connected to strategic planning and employer-aligned provision. Across these roles, his work is characterised by strong stakeholder engagement, a practical orientation toward implementation, and a commitment to designing learning and development that is responsive to technological, organisational, and sectoral change.
