Area of academic expertise - outline

Has significant experience in thin film physics/material physics and applications in optical coatings, hyperspectral-imaging, sensors, life science (SERS) and flexible electronics, including the aspects of material, process, characterization, modelling/simulation, application and device design, particularly in optical thin films. Also has additional skills in Mathcad, Matlab, C++, VB and Fortran programming, and programming for MCU (Micro Control Unit).

Current research activities

Research projects in the area of thin films for imaging and sensors as Principle Investigator (PI), Co-Investigator (CoI) and PhD supervisor are exampled below:

  • Process Control Technologies for Manufacturing (PI, 2020, NMIS-IDP);
  • Improved and low-cost infrared linear variable filters for spectrometry (PI, 2019, CENSIS);
  • Development of a low cost miniaturised hyperspectral imaging camera, Optical Imaging Leverage Grant, (PI, 2019,SUPA);
  • Develop a miniaturized NIR spectrometer for VOCs detection (PI, 2019, KTP);
  • Feasibility of a Hyperspectral Crop Camera (HCC) for agriculture optimisation (PI, 2016,BBSRC and Innovate-UK);
  • CO2 sensor for greenhouse application (PI, 2014, SUPA);
  • High Density Plasma Assisted Electron Beam Deposition of Precision Optical Coatings offering enhanced throughput and retrofitability to existing & new deposition systems (CoI, 2017, Royal Academy of Engineering UK-China Industry Academia Partnership Programme)
  • A high growth spinout project for IR gas sensing (2016, CoI, Scottish Enterprise)
  • Self-powering gas and environment wireless sensor platform in building applications, (CoI, 2015, Innovate UK)
  • PhD projects as DOS:  currently supervising 5 PhD students, plus 2 completed PhD projects:  “Large area, high quality optical filters produced using plasma enhanced process for laser application”; Dr Cheng Li; “Metal Nanostructures Made by Oblique Angle Deposition on Templates for Solid State Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates”; Dr Hin On Martin Chu
