Personal profile

Overview

Prior to coming into education my experience was in clinical practice in specialist palliative care nursing. This remains one of my key interests, particularly in considering and exploring how palliative care education is integrated into nurse education.

Area of academic expertise - outline

My research experience so far has been in undertaking a small qualitative study exploring the concerns of patients with inoperable lung cancer. This was undertaken as part of the MSc in enhanced cancer and palliative care. The results of the study were utilised in reviewing the ways in which patients in this category were assessed by the specialist nursing palliative care team locally.

Desired research direction

The area I would be interested in pursuing is the integration of palliative care education into pre-registration nurse education as well as ways in which this education could be delivered.

Current research activities

Currently involved in developing a small study evaluating the delivery of teaching in pre-registration nursing on the topic of the deterioirating patient. This skills teaching is shared between adult and mental health nursing students in a collaborative delivery between adult and mental health lecturers.

Involved in the development of a practice initiative which aims to create additional learning opportunities for pre-registration nursing students in Part 3 of the programme, working collaboratively with practitioners, practice education facilitators and academic staff.
