My areas of interest include the development of journalism education, the magazine industry and the influence and effect of news in election campaigns.

I recently completed a DProf in Public Works - 

'Journalism: Finding its space in a new university. An exploration of how journalism education has developed within the University of the West of Scotland' (July 2017)

I have taught journalism for 17 years, preceded by more than a decade as a journalist working predominantly in the magazine sector, although also worked on newspapers and in corporate communication and public relations.

Since joining the academy I have explored a range of issues from news media influence in elections to the role of journalism education.

My current research is focussed around the development and role of journalism education, particularly within the higher education environment. My doctoral research is exploring the development of new journalism programmes in a new HEI and the challenges and opportunities around this.

I am interested to develop collaborative research with colleagues in other HEIs that teach journalism education to explore how the discipline continues to develop and embed itself into the life of the academy. I have been awarded a research bursary from the AJE to explore this field of research.

I hope also to explore more fully the ways in which the academic discipline interfaces with the news media to enable both parties to meet the demands of the changes in news presentation and consumption.

I am also interested in exploring inter-disciplinarity, in particular to look across the diversity of the subjects taught in the wider academy and how these can contribute to the development of journalism education.
