Personal profile
Overview
I qualified as an Adult Nurse in 1998. I then went to work in the Renal unit in the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, where I worked for 8 years. In 2004 I started working as a Lecturer/Practitioner and stayed in this post for 18 months. I then worked as a Practice Education Facilitator for approximately 3 months before moving back into nurse education on a full time basis and have spent the last 11 years working in part one of the BSc Adult Nursing programme.
As part of this role my responsibilities are to support student nurses in theory and out in their practice placement. I also work as an
Admissions Officer in the Dumfries campus, and facilitate and support marketing events, schools event, open and applicants events on
campus.
I am also the Equality and Diversity co-ordinator for the adult nursing students across all three parts of the programme.
Desired research direction
As part of my current role I am the Equality and Diversity co-ordinator for the adult nursing students in the Dumfries campus. I support students going out into clinical placement. This is an area that is very interesting and one in which I enjoy.
Another area of interest is Infection Control. I lead the Cleanliness Champion Programme for the adult nursing students and am interested in the delivery of this programme for pre-registration nursing students as a teaching methodology. I would like to undertake further work relating to student experiences of infection control education.
An area of interest for me is student nurse recruitment. I am currently working as an admissions officer in the Dumfries campus and am interested in evaluating a change in the recruitment process, that commenced in 2017, across four of our campuses.
Current research activities
I am involved in an ethnographic study: Recognising and responding to patient deterioration - developing student nurses' competency using a shared approach.
I would like to evaluate the new programme for pre-registrationn nurses from a lecturing and student view point.
Area of academic expertise - outline
My interests are in renal nursing, focusing on Acute and Chronic renal disease, Haemodialysis and peritneal dialysis. Infection control education in pre-registration nurse education and the different teaching approaches used.
