Area of academic expertise - outline

All eight human herpesviruses establish a lifelong persistence (called latency) in the body upon primary infection. They cannot be eliminated. Immediately upon entry of the virus genome into the nucleus, pre-existing cellular proteins try to repress virus replication in a process called intrinsic resistance. I investigate if, and how, this might be involved in the establishment and maintenance of, and reactivation from, latency.

Current research activities

I generate human sensory neurons from pluripotent stem cells and use these in a latency model for human herpesvirus infection.

I use specifically designed molecular tools to manipulate these neurons and investigate the mechanism by which neuronal cellular proteins are facilitating herpesvirus latency.

Other areas of expertise available for knowledge exchange

I manipulate large virus genomes as Bacterial Artificial Chromosomes (BACs) to generate mutant DNA viruses.

I use confocal microscopy, protein interaction studies (immunoblot, immunoprecipitation), I generate stable cell lines, work with stem cells and work in virus infected cells in BSL2 conditions. I am a BSL2 Biosafety officer.
