Personal profile

In 2012 I graduated from the University of Glamorgan (newly names, University of South Wales) with a first class honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science. During my time at Glamorgan,  I was awarded a place on a research expedition to assist in data collection on a trip to Chile and Bolivia where we were assessing the effects of altitude on various cardiovascular parameters. In 2013 I graduated from the same university with a distinction in the MSc Sports, Health and Exercise Science while being awarded 'top of the class'. After a two-year hiatus from academia, I was awarded a Ph.D studentship from the the University of the West of Scotland due to my previous academic excellence.

Current research activities

I am currently in the final year of my PhD looking at the reasons behind the large variability we see in regularly measured variables in nitrate research. I have currently completed three studies which have looked at 1) how posture affects circulating nitrate and nitrite levels in human blood, 2) the within and between subject variability in nitrate-reducing bacteria, as well as plasma, saliva and urine pharmacokinetics following dietary nitrate supplementation, and 3) the effect of blood collection methods on circulating nitric oxide metabolites. The final study of the PhD, which is currently underway, will seek to find the differences in these variables during the summer and winter months and how seasonal variations affect markers of cardiovascular health. The collection of publications that will make up my final PhD thesis will have recommendations on the best practice for controlling variability in regularly measured variables within the literature. Additionally, the final study of the PhD will contribute to explaining why there is a disparity between cardiovascular-related deaths between the summer and winter months.
