Co-director of the Scottish Centre for Island Studies.

Current research activities

Key current research focus includes:

  • rural and remote places and lives, with specific reference to Scotland’s islands and issues of community, sustainability and enterprise;
  • the mediatization and representation of Scotland with reference to alterity, heritage and negotiated identity;
  • cultural work, enterprise, place and rural cultural industries.

Desired research direction

To engage further with an island studies and remote rural research focus within Scotland as a collaborative, co-produced and community engaged activity.  In addition, I wish to undertake inter-disciplinary research collaboration with Scottish based HEIs, local authority agencies and SMEs as well as with international education providers and partners with interests in remote and rural cultures, island studies and critiques of Scottish identity, community and its mediatization.

Target collaborative organisations

  • All Scottish HEI’s but most especially the Intercultural Research Centre (IRC), Heriot-Watt University;  Centre for  Rural Creativity, Centre for Nordic studies, Centre for Remote and Rural Studies,  University of the Highlands and Islands;  School of Film and Media, University of Stirling; and Scottish Rural University College (SRUC), for example.

 

Target collaborative organisations

  • Highlands and Islands Enterprise; Scottish Gaelic arts and culture agencies and companies;  and remote rural and island local authorities, social and community enterprises, heritage agencies, museums, arts and archives and any SMEs working across remote rural culture, heritage, community, media and sustainability agenda.

 

Target collaborative organisations

  • North Atlantic and Arctic education and cultural partners including, University of the Lapland and University of the Arctic partners; Island Studies university networks including  University of Prince Edward Island, (UPEI)Canada ; St Francis Xavier, NS, Canada;  and any  small and remote island based education providers and cultural economy SMEs globally.
