Area of academic expertise - outline


Prof Tedford's research concentrates on the effect of colonic propionate on appetite regulation, body weight and insulin sensitivity. Obesity and its associated diseases, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and certain cancers, are major public health challenges for the 21st century. The objective of her research is to identify an intervention that decreases appetite, prevents weight gain and reduces insulin resistance, and which is applicable at a public health level. Catriona also has interests in the development of novel tracers for characterisation of colon bacterial metabolism and novel biomarkers of the nitrosation potential of the GI tract.
