Kate Cotter

I am Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Television, Radio & Podcast Production at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), where I teach across television, radio, podcasting and media production while leading curriculum development, industry engagement and programme enhancement. My teaching is informed by over fifteen years' professional experience across the television and film industries, combined with a strong commitment to student success, authentic learning and widening participation.

Before entering academia, I worked as a Producer, Director, Development Producer, Literary Agent and Script Development Executive with organisations including IWC Media, Endemol, Lion Television, Cineflix, Hartswood Films and ICM Partners. I produced and directed more than 100 hours of broadcast television for BBC, Channel 4, Five, Discovery, STV and Sky, alongside maintaining an independent creative practice producing commissioned work for cultural and community organisations.

At UWS I have led curriculum innovation, programme redesign and ScreenSkills Select accreditation, developing industry-facing modules, placements, live briefs and strategic partnerships with broadcasters, production companies and creative organisations. I currently serve as Industry Lead for the Creative Media Academy, am an elected member of UWS Senate and represent the School on the Academic Quality Committee. Externally, I am External Examiner for BA Media Production at the University of the West of England, a member of the RTS Scotland Education Committee, Higher Education Representative on the Qualifications Scotland Radio & Podcast Production Advisory Group, a Qualifications Scotland Qualifications Development Specialist and a Board Member of Document International Human Rights Film Festival.

I am currently undertaking a PhD at UWS exploring gender inequality and organisational structures within Scottish television production. My research examines alternative models for improving women's representation in factual television directing and sits at the intersection of feminist media studies, television production studies and creative industries policy. I regularly present at national and international conferences and publish on television, higher education pedagogy and the creative industries through both academic and public-facing platforms.

My research interests include television production, feminist media studies, screen industries, women in broadcasting, creative labour, higher education pedagogy, authentic assessment, industry partnerships and student engagement.
