Personal profile

Overview

My formal academic and research training was  at Paisley College (now UWS), Rowett Research Institute (now part of the University of Aberdeen- College of Life Sciences and Medicine), and the Biophysical Chemistry Dept. of Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute, Manchester. My research training and subsequent work has been in the Physical Organic, and Analytical Chemistry, Photo-Medicinal and Health related Chemistry.

Research Interests:

  • Photosensitised Reactions (Kinetic and Mechanistic Studies) of relevance to Cancer Phototherapy and Lipid Peroxidation.
  • Photochemistry and Photophysics of Dyes, Pigments, Energetic Molecules (explosives) and other Organic Molecules.

  • Free radical oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids: anti-oxidant and trans-isomer behaviour.
  • Use of Steady-State and Pulsed Irradiation Techniques and Chromatography in the Study of Photosensitised Reactions and Singlet Molecular Oxygen Interactions of Chemical and Biochemical Relevance.
